The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), on June 12, 2026, issued an advisory directing all Food Business Operators (FBOs) to immediately stop using metallic pins, staple pins, wires, or similar materials for sealing, fastening, securing, or packaging food products. The advisory follows reports of metallic pins being found in decorative cakes, food packets, cake boxes, sweet boxes, snack pouches, takeaway parcels, and other food packages, posing a serious food safety risk to consumers.
FSSAI noted that accidental consumption of such metallic objects can cause injuries and adverse health consequences. Therefore, FBOs have been instructed to discontinue their use in the preparation, packaging, and distribution of food items in the interest of public health and consumer safety.
The Authority has cautioned that any violation of this directive may attract penal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 and the regulations framed thereunder. The advisory has been issued with the approval of the Competent Authority and is applicable to all Food Business Operators across the country.
